Steve Veilleux, Contrecœur, Québec | steveveilleux.com

Born in 1985, Steve Veilleux is a Québec artist hailing from Contrecœur, where he still lives. His practice is built around notions of appropriation, of landscape transformed and of the suburbanization of rural and semi-rural territory.

His work calls into question the way in which transformations that will be made to the territory are represented, through a variety of mediums, and highlights the ideological character that inextricably interferes in the process. In 2012 he was the winner of a young-artist grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, which enabled him to carry out a project called Les Rangs (Back Roads), recently published in the form of an artist’s book. His work has been published on a number of occasions, including in the magazine Ciel variable, in Flash Forward and in the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. His photographs have primarily been exhibited in Canada and the United States.

Projections

“The project that I’m exhibiting, Projections, embodies a critique of the utopian vision conveyed by the construction industry through its signs announcing upcoming constructions. Photographing those billboards at night with a flash, I later distort them in postproduction by removing all textual elements, leaving just the graphic language. In that way I can better challenge the manipulative dimension of the images while also highlighting the impact that this imagery exerts on our conception of the territory at the environmental, social and political levels.”
