His in-depth exploration, spread out over a number of themes, probes the \u201clife cycle\u201d of this essential fuel. \u201cWe are drawn by desire \u2013 a chance at good living,\u201d states the photographer, \u201cyet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.\u201d Edward Burtynsky has received numerous awards, including, in 2011, the Gold Prize in conceptual photography from the National Magazine Awards and the MOCCA Award in Contemporary Art (both Toronto).<\/p>\n<p>For his part, <strong>Gabor Szilasi<\/strong>, a documentary photographer recognized for his humanitarian vision, has put down roots in the Gasp\u00e9 during two artist\u2019s residencies over the last two years. Using photography as a medium, in 2010 he documented his visit to the north coast, and then in 2011, to Matapedia Valley by way of Baie-des-Chaleurs. Gaspesian Encounters brings together in Gasp\u00e9 30 portraits resulting from those residencies. The artist is a winner of the Governor General\u2019s Award (2010) and the Prix Paul-\u00c9mile Borduas (2009).<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, <strong>Doreen Lindsay<\/strong> creates images derived from her personal experiences of the last 40 years by combining painting, printmaking and photography. With Plants: Indigenous and Captured, she presents in Gasp\u00e9 a selection of black and white photos of trees and grasses hand-colored in oil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over 30 photographers in 14 host municipalities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Until <strong>September 10<\/strong>, the public is invited to journey over the Gasp\u00e9 Peninsula and follow the artistic trajectory of over 30 photographers from here and elsewhere in the 14 municipalities playing host to Rencontres: <strong>Cap-Chat, Marsoui, Rivi\u00e8re-\u00e0-Claude, Grande-Vall\u00e9e, Gasp\u00e9, Perc\u00e9, Chandler, Pasp\u00e9biac, Bonaventure, New Richmond, Maria, Carleton-sur-Mer, Nouvelle<\/strong> and <strong>Matapedia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong>August 18 to 25<\/strong>, the <strong>professional week<\/strong> will be held, which brings together <strong>all the photographers<\/strong> taking part in <strong>Rencontres around the subject of creation<\/strong>.
